Chapter Activities (work in progress)

Chapter 1 - Journey to Kumasi

Chapter 1 is a great chapter to teach foreshadowing.  Kofi and his family discuss the slave trade and how it will never affect them.  Chapter 1 is also where you meet Kofi and his family.  This tree helps the reader to keep track of the relationships.

Chapter 2 - The Golden Stool

Chapter 2 focuses on the ceremony at Kumasi.  Mrs. Hansen brings to life the experience through vivid wording that appeals to the 5 senses.  It is perfect for teaching visualization and imagery.

Chapter 3 - Betrayal

Chapter 3 contains examples of both internal and external conflict.  Kofi questions himself as to whether he should tell his family of his suspicions (internal).  Additionally, his family is attacked and Kofi is kidnapped by slave traders (external).
